CARBOX 830 is a high-performance coconut shell granular activated carbon manufactured by high-temperature steam activation. Its listed micropore structure is intended for adsorption of small organic molecules associated with discolouration, odour and dissolved organic loading. The 8×30 mesh is suitable for media bags, fluidised reactors and pressurised filter housings.

The CARBOX 830 difference

Purpose-built carbon

Micropore structure

More than 95% micropore volume is listed, with pores under 2 nm, supporting adsorption of smaller organic molecules.

High surface area

The product specification lists 1100–1150 m²/g total surface area measured by the N₂ BET method.

Hard, low-dust granules

At least 98% hardness and very low dust support cleaner handling and longer media-bed service between changes.

Technical features

What is inside

Surface area

1100–1150 m²/g by N₂ BET method.

Iodine number

≥1050 mg/g per ASTM D4607.

CTC activity

55% per ASTM D3467.

Hardness

≥98% per ASTM D3802.

Pore volume

0.45–0.5 cm³/g total pore volume, with more than 95% micropore volume.

Purity indicators

≤8% ash and ≤5% moisture under the listed test methods.

How to use

Five simple steps

CARBOX 830 activated carbon granules
  1. Rinse thoroughly. Flush with fresh water until it runs clear before first use.
  2. Dose it right. Add 100–200 mL per 100 L of system water as a general starting rate.
  3. Load the filter. Place in a media bag (500 μm mesh or finer), fluidised reactor or pressurised filter housing.
  4. Allow contact time. Position downstream of biological filtration — slower flow generally gives better adsorption.
  5. Replace the media. Replace every 4–8 weeks depending on bioload and water quality. Spent carbon cannot be regenerated.
Organic and chemical control

What CARBOX adsorbs

Actual performance depends on concentration, contact time, flow, competing compounds and replacement schedule.

Dissolved organics

Tannins, humic acids, yellow water and other dissolved organic compounds.

Taste and odour

Geosmin, 2-MIB and other taste or odour compounds listed for carbon adsorption.

Chlorine and chloramine

Useful for treating source water and makeup water where these residuals are present.

Medication residues

Suitable for post-treatment cleanup when the treatment label permits activated carbon use.

VOCs and phenols

Volatile organic compounds and phenolic compounds are included in the listed target group.

Pesticides and sulphur compounds

Pesticides, herbicides, hydrogen sulphide and mercaptans are listed application targets.

Connections and options

Choose the right setup

Media bag

Use a 500 μm mesh or finer bag and rinse the carbon until the water runs clear.

Fluidised reactor

The 8×30 granules can be used in a suitable fluidised reactor with controlled flow.

Pressurised housing

Suitable for a compatible pressurised filter housing sized for the system flow.

Downstream placement

The label guidance places carbon downstream of biological filtration for best results.

Frequently asked questions

CARBOX 830 FAQs

What dose of CARBOX 830 should I use?

The general aquarium starting rate is 100–200 mL per 100 L of system water. Adjust within that range for bioload and water quality, and contact BTA for aquaculture or RAS systems.

What mesh size is CARBOX 830?

8×30 mesh, listed as 0.6–2.3 mm granule size. The supplied guidance identifies this range for media bags, reactors and filter housings.

What does CARBOX 830 remove?

The supplied product information lists dissolved organic compounds, taste and odour compounds, chlorine and chloramine, medication and antibiotic residues, VOCs and phenols, pesticides and herbicides, endocrine disruptors, hydrogen sulphide and mercaptans.

Can I use it in a mesh bag or reactor?

Yes. Use a 500 μm mesh or finer bag, a suitable fluidised reactor or a compatible pressurised filter housing. Rinse before loading.

How often should it be replaced?

The supplied label guidance is every 4–8 weeks depending on bioload and water quality. Higher-demand systems may require more frequent replacement.

Do I need to rinse it first?

Yes. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water until it runs clear before first use. Avoid inhaling dust.

Not sure which media or dose fits?
