Enzymes:
The "Big Four" Sludge & Waste Removers
- Protease: Breaks down proteins, which are the main component of fish waste (feces), uneaten food, and organic sludge.
- Amylase: Breaks down starches and complex carbohydrates found in fish food and plant waste.
- Lipase: Breaks down fats, oils, and lipids that come from fish food and oily waste.
- Cellulase: Breaks down cellulose, the tough, fibrous material in dead plant matter, algae, and plant-based fish foods.
Nitrification (Ammonia Removal) Enzymes
- Ammonia monooxygenase (AMO): The first step in nitrification. Converts toxic Ammonia () into hydroxylamine.
- Hydroxylamine oxidoreductase (HAO): The second step. Converts hydroxylamine into toxic Nitrite ().
- Nitrite oxidoreductase (NXR): The final step. Converts toxic Nitrite into much safer Nitrate.

- Keratinase: A special protease that breaks down tough keratin (found in fish slime, skin, and scales).
