BTA Bioballs
Precision-moulded HDPE bioballs for trickle filters, sumps and high-flow biological systems. Three sizes, one purpose: maximum surface area, minimum restriction.

Not all bioballs are created equal. BTA balls use a high-grade HDPE lattice that maximises useful surface area without choking flow or trapping solids.
Flow-Through Filtration Media
BTA Bioballs are engineered to give bacteria a home and water a highway. The open geometry prevents dead zones and clogging while exposing biofilm to oxygen, ammonia and organic waste in constant motion.
Available in three diameters, each ball keeps a high internal surface area while leaving plenty of void space for turbulence, gas exchange and solids flushing ā critical in trickle filters, sumps and high-turnover RAS systems.
High Void Space
Open-lattice construction keeps channels clear for water flow, oxygen penetration and solids flushing. Reduces clogging compared to dense foam or mat media.
Biofilm Friendly
Protected internal struts give nitrifying bacteria a stable surface to colonise while the outer turbulence strips away excess biomass naturally.
Built to Last
Virgin HDPE resists UV, salt, acids and mechanical wear. No crumbling, no breakdown, no clouding tanks ā even after years of continuous use.
Self-Cleaning Geometry
Rounded surfaces and open-water channels let detritus wash through rather than settle, cutting maintenance and backwash frequency.

Four Steps To A Better Biofilter
Measure Volume
Calculate the empty chamber volume. Typical bioball fill is 50ā80% of the chamber, leaving headroom for water to fall and mix.
Load By Size
Use 25 mm in compact sumps, 38 mm for general ponds/RAS, and 50 mm in high-flow towers or low-shear zones.
Seed The Bed
Allow natural colonisation, or accelerate startup with Nitroplex or a mature bio-media transfer.
Maintain Flow
Keep water moving over the balls. Periodic rinsing in drained system water removes detritus without killing nitrifiers.
