BTA HDPE Bioballs are the filtration upgrade when surface area, void space and self-cleaning behaviour matter most. The open, lattice design lets water pass through freely while providing protected pockets for nitrifying bacteria to colonise — making them ideal for trickle towers, shower filters, sumps and high-flow recirculating systems.

Not all bioballs are created equal. BTA balls use a high-grade HDPE lattice that maximises useful surface area without choking flow or trapping solids.

BTA Bioballs are engineered to give bacteria a home and water a highway. The open geometry prevents dead zones and clogging while exposing biofilm to oxygen, ammonia and organic waste in constant motion.

Available in three diameters, each ball keeps a high internal surface area while leaving plenty of void space for turbulence, gas exchange and solids flushing — critical in trickle filters, sumps and high-turnover RAS systems.

Q What size bioball should I use?
Choose 25 mm for small sumps and compact filters, 38 mm for ponds and general aquaculture, and 50 mm for high-flow commercial towers where low restriction matters.
Q Are these safe for saltwater systems?
Yes. Virgin HDPE is inert and highly resistant to saltwater, so our bioballs are suitable for marine aquariums, brackish systems and freshwater ponds.
Q How do I clean the balls?
Rinse lightly in drained system water to remove detritus. Avoid chlorinated tap water, aggressive acids or caustics that could kill the biofilm or degrade the HDPE.
Q How much media do I need?
Aim to fill roughly 50–80% of your filter chamber volume. The exact amount depends on bio-load, flow rate and oxygen availability. We're happy to help size it.
