SUPER FUN TIME WEDNESDAY #1
Hey
How ya Goin?
Good thanks!
First Installment of Super Fun Time Wednesday. It's Wednesday. It's Super Fun. You get it.
Random Wednesdays we drop a video — aquaculture, ornamental fish, and all the good stuff in between. This is number one.
This episode comes from a road trip a couple of years back — a visit to Coastal Clownfish, run by Matt and Jade. We stumbled across the footage recently and thought: we need to get this out there.
Because if you breed fish, keep fish, or run a hatchery — this one's for you.
Who Are Matt & Jade?
Coastal Clownfish is arguably the highest quality clownfish producer in Australia. We're not just talking standard orange and white ocellaris — though they do those impeccably. We're talking black and whites, percula clowns, maroon clowns, Lightning Maroons, and a staggering range of morphs and colour variations across multiple species.
Matt and Jade have been long-time friends and are two of the most respected people in the Australian ornamental fish space. In over 20 years in the aquaculture industry, I've seen a lot of hatcheries. Their operation puts a lot of commercial aquaculture hatcheries to shame. That's not a throwaway line — I mean it.
Clean. Tidy. Insanely good stocking densities. These guys actually know what they're doing.

The Non-Negotiable Protocol
In this first episode, we focus on THE most important thing you should do before you touch anything in your fish room or hatchery. It's not testing your water. It's not checking your filtration. It's washing your hands.
Matt and Jade's protocol — and it's non-negotiable every single time they walk into the room:
1
Sanitise — fragrance-free, alcohol-based hand sanitiser
2
Let it dry — don't rush this step, let the alcohol do its work
3
Wash — rinse hands with clean water to remove residual sanitiser
4
Dry — use a clean towel, hands must be completely dry before going near water
That's before they even think about going near water. We go through the full reasoning in the video — why each step matters, what can go wrong if you skip it, and how this connects to fish health downstream.
What's Coming Next?
This is the first of about seven or eight episodes from our visit to Coastal Clownfish. They'll be dropping on Super Fun Time Wednesday — random Wednesdays — in no particular order. Two veterans of the industry talking shop, realising that the old dogs can learn new tricks, but that sometimes you need to go back to the basics.
Make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss the rest.
