Most carriers quote a bulk surface area that includes exposed, high-shear exterior surfaces. Hel-X focuses on the surface that actually matters: protected, sheltered area where mature biofilm can thrive.
806 m²/m³ Protected Surface Area
Bulk numbers can be misleading. The Hel-X 13KLL+ delivers 806 m²/m³ of protected surface area — the sheltered internal surface where stable, high-activity biofilm develops without being scoured away by media collisions or aeration.
With a bulk surface area of 955 m²/m³ and a compact 13 mm × 12 mm form factor, the Type 7F+ geometry maximises usable surface while maintaining the free flow and low hydraulic resistance that keep oxygen and nutrients evenly distributed through the bed.
Type 7F+ Geometry
Cross-shaped body with low intermediate lamellas creates optimal gaps for water flow, diffuses shear forces, and prevents media from clumping or fouling.
HDPE Virgin or Recycled
Choose white virgin HDPE or black recycled HDPE. Both share the same 13 mm × 12 mm dimensions and surface-area specifications.
Energy-Efficient Fluidisation
Low-density polyethylene and hydrodynamically tuned lamellas reduce the mixing energy required to keep the bed moving — lower aeration cost, longer blower life.
Biofilm Protection
The sheltered internal structure protects biomass from abrasion, keeping active nitrifiers and heterotrophs on the carrier instead of washing out into the effluent.

Four Steps To A Better Biofilter
Calculate Volume
Size your reactor fill fraction. Typical MBBR fill is 30–70%; RAS biofilters usually run 20–40%. Multiply reactor volume by fill fraction to get media litres.
Aerate & Mix
Use coarse-bubble aeration or mechanical mixing to keep Hel-X in continuous motion. The low-density HDPE and 7F+ shape keep energy demand modest.
Seed The Biofilter
Allow natural colonisation, or jump-start nitrification with Nitroplex or a compatible beneficial-microbe consortium.
Monitor & Maintain
Watch pressure drop, biofilm thickness and mixing quality. Occasional air-scouring or backwashing shears excess biomass and restores flow.
