Hel-X 13KLL+ is the media choice when surface area, mixing efficiency and long-term durability matter. The patented Type 7F+ cross with low intermediate lamellas prevents clumping, protects active biofilm from shear, and keeps energy costs low while delivering the nitrification and organic pollutant removal capacity that MBBR and RAS systems demand.

Protected Surface. Better Biology.

Most carriers quote a bulk surface area that includes exposed, high-shear exterior surfaces. Hel-X focuses on the surface that actually matters: protected, sheltered area where mature biofilm can thrive.

The Critical Metric

806 m²/m³ Protected Surface Area

Bulk numbers can be misleading. The Hel-X 13KLL+ delivers 806 m²/m³ of protected surface area — the sheltered internal surface where stable, high-activity biofilm develops without being scoured away by media collisions or aeration.

With a bulk surface area of 955 m²/m³ and a compact 13 mm × 12 mm form factor, the Type 7F+ geometry maximises usable surface while maintaining the free flow and low hydraulic resistance that keep oxygen and nutrients evenly distributed through the bed.

⚙️

Type 7F+ Geometry

Cross-shaped body with low intermediate lamellas creates optimal gaps for water flow, diffuses shear forces, and prevents media from clumping or fouling.

♻️

HDPE Virgin or Recycled

Choose white virgin HDPE or black recycled HDPE. Both share the same 13 mm × 12 mm dimensions and surface-area specifications.

💨

Energy-Efficient Fluidisation

Low-density polyethylene and hydrodynamically tuned lamellas reduce the mixing energy required to keep the bed moving — lower aeration cost, longer blower life.

🛡️

Biofilm Protection

The sheltered internal structure protects biomass from abrasion, keeping active nitrifiers and heterotrophs on the carrier instead of washing out into the effluent.

Four Steps To A Better Biofilter

01
📐

Calculate Volume

Size your reactor fill fraction. Typical MBBR fill is 30–70%; RAS biofilters usually run 20–40%. Multiply reactor volume by fill fraction to get media litres.

02
💨

Aerate & Mix

Use coarse-bubble aeration or mechanical mixing to keep Hel-X in continuous motion. The low-density HDPE and 7F+ shape keep energy demand modest.

03
🧬

Seed The Biofilter

Allow natural colonisation, or jump-start nitrification with Nitroplex or a compatible beneficial-microbe consortium.

04
🔁

Monitor & Maintain

Watch pressure drop, biofilm thickness and mixing quality. Occasional air-scouring or backwashing shears excess biomass and restores flow.

Sizing & Fill Rates

Typical fill fractions and recommended use cases for Hel-X 13KLL+.

Application Typical Fill Surface Benefit Notes
MBBR Wastewater 30–70% reactor volume 806 m²/m³ protected Primary/secondary treatment; BOD & ammonia removal
RAS Aquaculture 20–40% biofilter volume High nitrification surface Pair with reliable aeration & solids removal
IFAS Upgrade 10–30% mixed with biomass Extra attached biofilm Retrofit existing activated-sludge tanks
Biogas / Gas Scrubbing Design-specific Chemical/biological scrubbing Contact BTA for reactor sizing

Helpsheet: 1000 L reactor at 50% fill = 500 L media ≈ 403 m² effective protected surface. Sold by litre or cubic metre — contact us for bulk quoting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q What is protected surface area vs bulk surface area?
Protected surface is the sheltered internal surface where biofilm is protected from shear and abrasion. Bulk surface includes all exterior contact surfaces. Hel-X 13KLL+ offers 806 m²/m³ protected and 955 m²/m³ bulk.
Q How does Hel-X 13KLL+ compare to other moving-bed media?
The Type 7F+ geometry and low lamellas give Hel-X superior mixing and anti-clumping behaviour alongside a high protected surface area. Many operators report more stable biofilm and lower energy use compared to older cross-style media.
Q Should I choose black recycled or white virgin HDPE?
Both have identical dimensions and specifications. Black recycled is a sustainable, cost-effective option. White virgin is often specified where visual inspection of biofilm thickness or colour-matching matters.
Q What fill fraction should I use?
Typical MBBR design uses 30–70% fill; RAS biofilters usually run 20–40%. Higher fill = more surface area but requires more mixing energy. We can calculate the sweet spot for your specific hydraulic and ammonia load.
Q Is Hel-X safe for saltwater / marine RAS?
Yes. HDPE is chemically inert and highly resistant to seawater and brackish conditions. Hel-X 13KLL+ is suitable for marine RAS, brackish systems and freshwater applications.
Q How do I clean or recover the media?
If the bed becomes sluggish due to excess biofilm, perform a controlled air scour or backwash to shear biomass. Avoid aggressive solvents, acids or caustics that may damage HDPE or downstream biology.
