The BTA TAN-X Chip™ is the flagship biofilter media in our TAN-X range, purpose-built to remove Total Ammonia Nitrogen (TAN), nitrite and nitrate from recirculating aquaculture systems, aquariums and advanced water treatment circuits.

Q.How does it compare to K1 or K3 media?
TAN-X Chip offers 5,500 m²/m³ of protected surface area versus ~500 m²/m³ for K1, and its S-shape geometry promotes superior mixing and oxygen transfer. Conservative performance is roughly 6× higher TAN conversion per cubic metre.
Q.Can I mix it with my existing media?
Yes. It can be blended into an existing bed to boost capacity or deployed in a dedicated reactor for maximum control and performance.
Q.What fill fraction should I use?
Most RAS biofilters run well at 20–40% fill. Dedicated high-rate nitrification reactors may run higher, provided mixing energy and oxygen transfer keep the bed evenly moving.
Q.Is it safe for marine / saltwater systems?
Yes. The HDPE construction is chemically inert and highly resistant to seawater, brackish water and freshwater environments.
Q.How do I clean the media if it clogs?
If biofilm overgrowth slows movement, perform a controlled air scour or gentle backwash. Avoid aggressive solvents, acids or caustics that could damage HDPE or kill beneficial biomass.
