MBBR Media

Moving Bed Biological reactors are industry standard for the Aquaculture industry with good reason, they are reliable, predictable, can go without water or air flow for longer period of time that other biological filters, and have biofilm control, to maintain efficient biological filtration.

Media choice is as important as reactor design and Hel-X 13KLL+ and Hel-X Flake offer superior efficiency in RAS MBBR's.

HEL-X 13KLL+ is our standard offering for aquaculture systems for its high surface area and

cleaning capabilities.

Hel-X's spiral design concept allows superior flushing of internals lamina's, high sheering rates for control of biofilm thickness and optimum transport of oxygen and nutrients to the internal biofilm.

As well as superior cleaning, the open matrix design of 13KLL+ allows for better mixing inside the reactor, helping to eliminate dead spots and maximise contact with waste

Virgin HDPE

HEL-X flake has a MASSIVE Internal surface area due to internal pore structure.

Its internal pore structure ranges in size from 40-400 microns making it ideal for bacterial colonisation.

All of its 5500m2/m3 internal surface area is active for biological protection due to the internal protection provided, allowing for a massive boost to nitrification capacity.

Its Patented wafer cut design also assists in circulation and cleaning, avoids packing and improves biofilm growth

Virgin HDPE

Used often as the final 10% of the fill rate in reactors (to bring fill rate up to 60%) to increase carrying capacity, increase removal rates per pass (decrease system ammonia and nitrite concentrations), or boost bio-filter performance, especially in cold water systems.

Static Bed media

Static beds (also called fixed beds,) are also widespread in the aquaculture industry. They utilise small media in a packed (static) configuration and water either flows up or down through the media, polishing the water whilst also providing biological filtration. Media choice and regular maintenance are important to maintain optimum efficiency, oxygen transfer, export of waste, and to eliminate the possibility of anaerobic pockets forming in the bed.

Hel-X 13KLL+ Floating and Sinking

HEL-X 13KLL+, whilst optimised for MBBR's in a fluidised configuration is also great for static bed filters.

Hel-X's spiral design concept when used in a static bed results in superior oxygen transfer and water distribution, whilst providing sites through the end profile as well as the side profile, for waste capture and settling.

Perfect for replacing hard to backwash media in media filters using glass or sand.

We recommend that air scouring be employed for cleaning as a superior way to flush and remove accumulated waste.

When used in a static bed post mechanical filtration similar nitrification rates can be expected to a moving bed, but when used as the sole mechanical filtration biological filtration can be expected to be reduced.
